The Climate and Biodiversity Emergency

And What We Can Do About It

June 20 Presentation at the SS Public Library, 7.00pm

This spring, the Islands Trust officially declared that we are in a Climate Emergency that is presently propelling earth toward a dangerous and unlivable Hothouse planet. So too have the Cities of Vancouver, Richmond and Nelson, the Capitol Regional District, hundreds of other communities around the world and even the Parliament of the United Kingdom!

Our best science – summarized in a report released by the IPCC last October – shows that we have only until 2030 to eliminate 60% of our greenhouse gas emissions – and until 2050 to reach a net zero level – if we are to avoid the climate, ecological, social, and economic catastrophes inevitable on a planet heated by as much as 3-8 °C by 2100.

This presentation will look at the climate and biodiversity emergencies and explore personal actions in response to them.

Greta Thunberg, says that there is a simple solution to the Climate Emergency – get ourselves off of fossil fuels. And while it sounds simple at one level, how can that be done? And how will the transition from fossil fuel energy to efficiency, electrical energy, and reduced consumption affect our lives?

In this talk, we discuss steps to examine and reduce our carbon footprints and how each of us can begin to create an individual and social action plan for reaching the goals of low carbon (60% reduction) by 2030 and net zero by 2050.

This illustrated talk will be presented by local naturalist, science educator, and renewable energy activist, David Denning, and is co-sponsored by Salt Spring Community Energy, Salt Spring Ocean Stewards, Transition Salt Spring, Salt Spring Trail and Nature Club and the Salt Spring Public Library. The event will be held at the Salt Spring Public Library on June 20, starting at 7:00 pm.
